CruiserDesk FAQ
Straight answers to the questions chiefs, sheriffs, sergeants and officers ask most.
What is CruiserDesk?
CruiserDesk is a Windows app for police officers that takes arrest information one time, fills it into every form the officer selects, and builds a ready-to-submit PDF packet for the prosecutor, plus a separate packet for internal review when needed.
What forms does CruiserDesk fill out?
It fills your agency's own forms, such as probable cause affidavits, operating while intoxicated forms, search warrants and evidence discovery, plus internal department forms. Each question is asked once, even if five forms print the answer.
Can we use our own county's prosecutor forms?
Yes. CruiserDesk works with your agency's own fillable PDF forms. An administrator adds or updates forms with the tag import feature, and there's a CruiserDesk form library for a head start. Changes are published once and every officer's computer picks them up.
Do officers need special training?
CruiserDesk is built for officers who would rather be on patrol than at a keyboard: big buttons, plain language, one step at a time, and a live preview that shows where each answer lands on the form. There's no expensive training course.
Does CruiserDesk need an internet connection?
No. A lost connection never stops a packet, so officers can work in the car, at the station or anywhere else. New forms and updates download the next time the computer is online.
Where is case information stored?
Everything the officer types, including narratives and the names of suspects, victims and witnesses, stays on the computer where it was entered and is never sent to CopBuilt. Unfinished packets and saved answers are encrypted for that Windows user. Unfinished packets are deleted when the PDF is made or after 7 days, and finished PDFs are deleted from the computer after 7 days by default.
What does go through CopBuilt's portal?
Only the agency's blank forms and officer list, the license, an audit log that carries just the case number and defendant initials, computer check-ins, and crash reports with no case data. Forms are digitally signed by the agency, and every computer checks that signature before using them.
Is CruiserDesk CJIS compliant?
CruiserDesk was designed with CJIS security in mind: case details stay on agency computers, where your existing device security, encryption and access controls apply. Each agency remains responsible for its own CJIS Security Policy compliance, and we're happy to walk your IT staff or CJIS coordinator through exactly how it handles data.
How do packets get to the prosecutor?
CruiserDesk builds the court packet as one PDF. Officers can save it, print it, or submit it to the prosecutor's online drop folder (such as a county SharePoint library) where the county has one set up.
What about internal forms like use of force or pursuit reports?
Department forms are kept for the department and never go in the court packet unless the administrator says so. A department form can be a Smart Form: based on the officer's yes-or-no answers to questions your agency sets up, CruiserDesk adds the form to the packet and walks the officer through it.
What if we're waiting on lab results, like a blood draw?
The officer can mark the packet as waiting on lab results. The answers are kept, up to 30 days by agency setting, so the officer can add the results later and make an updated packet without retyping anything.
What if an officer gets a call in the middle of a packet?
Drafts save automatically every few seconds. The officer can leave and pick up exactly where they left off.
How is CruiserDesk licensed?
CruiserDesk is licensed to the agency each year, sized by the number of officers. Licensing doesn't block officers: if a license lapses, packets still work while the admin renews. Contact us for pricing.
Is CruiserDesk available now?
The Arrest Packet module is in development, and add-ons such as Use of Force, Vehicle Pursuit and Criminal Intel reports are planned. Contact us if your agency would like to try it.
